Factors Influencing Muslim Apparel
Islam has certain standards for the community`s personal modesty. This is also reflected in their styles of clothing. Though some may see such standards as conservative and out-dated, the values of public decency of the Muslim apparelare timeless. According to Qur`an and the traditions of Prophet Muhammad, the attires need to meet some minimum requirements.
The first bit of guidance regarding Muslim apparel describes that the followers of Islam should cover their body in public. Though it is applicable for men and women, the standards of modesty is generally high for the later. She needs to cover every parts of her body, especially her chest. However, Prophet Muhammad instructed that women cover their entire body except for their hands and shop hijab face. It is this instruction that has call for the requirement of head covering Muslim apparel for women.
According to Islam preaching, their apparel must be loose enough not to distinguish or outline the shape of their body. In fact, body-hugging and skin-tight clothes are taboo for both Muslim men and women. The women are required to wear cloak like garments called jilbabs and abayas over their personal clothing, while in public. In the predominantly Muslim countries, men generally wear a loose robe that covers their body from the neck to ankles.
See-through clothing is also forbidden by Islam. In fact, Prophet Muhammad had once warned the community that later generation people will tend to wear such clothes. There the Muslim apparel should be thick enough so as not to reveal the true color of the skin underneath. It should also hide the shape of the body.
According to Islam, the overall appearance of men and women should be modest and dignified. Thereby, they should avoid wearing clothes that are shiny and flashy as it will overpower the purpose of modesty in their overall appearance.
Most importantly, the teachings of Islam encourage their people to be proud of their originality. They should look like Muslims and should never imitate people of other religious faiths. It is a taboo for women to dress like men and must be proud of their femininity. It is for the same reason that Islam has forbidden their men from wearing silk and gold, as they are mainly feminine accessories.
The Qur`an has also described that Muslim apparel must be clean and decent and not ragged and excessively fancy. According to this holy book clothes are meant to cover the private areas of a person; thereby, the followers of Islam should not wear dresses that can gain the sympathy or admiration of other people.
